I grew up about forty minutes from a coal plant, and I still remember my mother checking the local air quality alerts before deciding whether my brother, who has asthma, could play outside. That memory is exactly what came rushing back to me this week when I read that the EPA had just repealed most the country's carbon emission limits on power plants, the electricity sector responsible for nearly a quarter of all US greenhouse gas pollution. I don't think this decision is simply a technical regulatory shuffle. I think it's a decision with a real, physical cost, and Americans deserve to understand exactly what just happened before the news cycle moves on.

Here's what the EPA did. On Monday, Administrator Lee Zeldin announced the agency had finalized the repeal of most of the Biden administration's 2024 Carbon Pollution Standards for coal- and gas-fired power plants, rules that would have required existing coal plants to cut emissions by 90 percent by 2032 and forced new natural gas plants to meet strict emissions standards. The EPA didn't stop at repeal, either. It simultaneously proposed a separate rule concluding that greenhouse gas emissions from fossil-fuel power plants "have no material impact on global climate change," a finding that, if finalized, would strip the agency's own future authority to regulate power sector emissions for climate purposes altogether. Assistant Administrator Aaron Szabo was blunt about the intent, telling reporters the years the Obama and Biden administrations spent trying to "destroy coal and natural gas are over." The EPA projects the repeal, alongside a related proposal, would save roughly $310.4 billion.

I want to take the administration's stated justification seriously, because it isn't entirely baseless. EPA officials pointed to the Supreme Court's 2022 ruling in West Virginia v. EPA, which limited the agency's authority to broadly restructure the nation's energy sector under the Clean Air Act, and argued the Biden rules relied on carbon capture technology that hasn't been adequately demonstrated at commercial scale. Energy Secretary Chris Wright framed the move as putting "the American people first" over what he called "climate alarmists." There's also a genuine, if narrow, technical argument here: if the underlying carbon capture technology genuinely isn't ready for widespread deployment, mandating it on an aggressive timeline could raise electricity costs without delivering the promised environmental benefit, a legitimate feasibility concern that deserves honest engagement rather than dismissal.

But I don't think that narrow technical argument comes close to justifying the scale of what happened here, and I think Americans should be deeply skeptical of the framing being sold to them. This isn't a modest adjustment to an overly ambitious carbon capture timeline. It's the wholesale repeal of federal climate authority over an entire sector, paired with a proposed finding that directly contradicts the overwhelming scientific consensus that power plant emissions meaningfully contribute to climate change. Connecticut Attorney General William Tong has already announced plans for legal action, saying his state is "ready to sue again" to protect public health. Climate Mayors Executive Director Kate Wright put the stakes plainly, warning that "while mayors continue to advance local initiatives to protect residents, the EPA is moving backwards." When state attorneys general and city leaders across the country are already mobilizing legal challenges within days of an announcement, that's not overreaction. That's a signal that the people closest to the public health consequences understand exactly what's at stake.

The timing here deserves scrutiny too. This rollback lands the same week the International Energy Agency revised its global coal demand projections upward, now expecting coal demand to rise 1.2 percent in 2026, reversing an earlier forecast of decline, largely because conflict in the Middle East has pushed natural gas prices higher. US coal demand, after decades of steady decline, rose roughly 10 percent last year. In other words, this deregulation is happening precisely as market conditions were already nudging the country back toward dirtier fuel sources, not as a counterweight to some imagined climate overreach, but as an accelerant layered directly on top of an existing trend in the wrong direction.

I also think it's worth being honest about who benefits from a rollback of this magnitude, and who bears the cost. Coal and gas plant operators get regulatory certainty and reduced compliance costs, a genuine and understandable relief for an industry that's spent years anticipating tighter rules. But the electricity sector's near-quarter share of national greenhouse gas emissions doesn't simply disappear because EPA stops counting it as a federal priority. That pollution still settles into the same communities living near power plants, disproportionately lower-income neighborhoods and communities of color that have long borne the heaviest burden of industrial air pollution in this country. My mother's asthma alerts weren't an abstraction. They were a direct, daily consequence of exactly the kind of emissions this rollback now let’s utilities produce with far less federal oversight.

So here is my direct plea, to Americans reading this and to the state and local leaders already signaling they'll fight back: don't let this rollback pass quietly into the news cycle as just another regulatory adjustment. Support the state attorneys general preparing litigation. Push your city and state leaders to adopt or strengthen local emissions standards that don't depend on federal cooperation. Demand that your congressional representatives, regardless of party, explain clearly where they stand on whether power plant emissions genuinely have "no material impact" on climate change, a claim that contradicts decades of peer-reviewed science and deserves to be challenged loudly rather than accepted by default. This fight isn't over simply because the EPA finalized a rule on a Monday afternoon; the legal battles ahead, and the local and state-level responses still being organized, will determine how much of this rollback survives contact with reality.

I think about my brother's inhaler every time I read another headline like this one. Somewhere in this country right now, another kid is waiting on their own version of that daily air quality check, and the rules governing what they're breathing just got dramatically weaker with far less public debate than a decision of this magnitude deserves. Don't let this be the version of the story that gets remembered. Ask harder questions, hold your local leaders accountable, and don't assume someone else is already fighting this battle for you.
