My uncle spent thirty-one years on an assembly line outside Lansing before he retired, and he still calls me every time an auto tariff headline breaks, mostly to ask whether it's helping people like the guys he used to work with. I never have a clean answer for him. After spending this week digging through the actual employment data behind Michigan's tariff story, I'm not sure anyone honestly does.

Let's start with what happened in July. President Trump visited General Motors' Milford Proving Ground in Oakland County and told a crowd of autoworkers, "I've done more for you than your parents, OK?" He credited his 25 percent tariff on imported vehicles and auto parts, first imposed in March 2025, with reviving American car production, claiming GM's truck and SUV output was up 20 percent this year and calling it something "no other president had the courage to ever do." The White House pointed out GM's $6 billion domestic manufacturing investment, along with smaller commitments from Ford, Stellantis, and Detroit Diesel, as proof the strategy was working.

Here's the part of the story that didn't make it into that speech. A Bridge Michigan fact-check of the same period found that, in the year ending June 2026, Michigan lost roughly 4,000 auto parts manufacturing jobs, a 3.5 percent decline, and about 7,000 manufacturing jobs overall, a 1.2 percent drop. Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows the state gained just 500 jobs in vehicle manufacturing specifically over that same window, a modest bright spot that's nowhere near enough to offset the parts-sector losses. Michigan's unemployment rate, meanwhile, has climbed for three straight months, reaching roughly 5.5 percent at one point, well above the national average of 4.2 percent. When a president tells a room full of autoworkers that tariffs have revived their industry, and the state's own labor data shows a net job loss in the exact sector he's describing, that gap deserves more scrutiny than it's gotten.

I want to be fair to the more optimistic read here, because it's not baseless spin. GM's own financial results genuinely have been strong, with the company posting a fifth consecutive earnings-per-share beat and a second guidance rise this year, its stock climbing 65 percent year-over-year, even while absorbing projected tariff costs between $2.5 and $3.5 billion. That's a real company thriving under real tariff pressure, largely by leaning into premium truck and SUV pricing that protects margins even as costs rise. And critically, not everyone in Michigan's labor movement views this as a failure. The United Auto Workers has publicly framed the tariffs as, in the union's own words, "a victory for autoworkers" and "the beginning of the end" of what it calls the "free trade disaster" created by NAFTA, arguing that decades of offshore production finally have a real structural check against them, regardless of short-term job number fluctuations.

But I don't think that framing survives contact with the specific data on the ground, and I think Michigan's own automotive industry group would agree with me. MichAuto, representing the state's auto and mobility sector, has been considerably blunter, warning that the tariffs have "crippled Michigan's car industry, slashed jobs, and turned 'Made in America' into 'Taxed in Michigan.'" That's not a progressive advocacy group or a Democratic talking point. That's the industry's own trade association, the people whose literal job is representing these manufacturers, describing the policy in terms that directly contradicts the administration's victory lap. And Yale's Budget Lab offers a longer-term version of the same warning: while it projects U.S. manufacturing output could eventually rise 2 percent under sustained tariffs, that gain gets more than crowded out elsewhere, with construction output contracting 2.4 percent and mining declining 1.1 percent, a genuine trade-off rather than a clean win.

There's also a financial burden here that lands directly on households, separate from the jobs question entirely. Michigan has absorbed an estimated $23.2 billion in tariff costs since 2025, the National Taxpayers Union Foundation calculates, working out to roughly $5,619 per household, the highest burden of any state in the country. That's not abstract trade statistics. That's real money coming out of family budgets in the same state where auto parts employment is shrinking, a genuinely uncomfortable combination for anyone trying to square the "tariffs are working" narrative with what residents are experiencing at the register and on the factory floor.

So, what does this mean for the person weighing whether to believe the White House's version of this story or the fact-checkers pushing back on it? It means Michigan is currently absorbing the country's steepest household tariff burden while simultaneously watching a meaningful chunk of its auto parts workforce shrink, even as the state's largest automaker posts genuinely strong financial results by raising prices rather than by hiring more people. It means "the auto industry is thriving" and "auto parts workers are losing jobs" can both be true at the same time, depending on which company, which sub-sector, and which quarter you're looking for. And it raises the question I still don't have a satisfying answer for when my uncle calls: if the workers this policy was explicitly designed to help are experiencing net job losses in their specific corner of the industry, even as corporate profits climb and household costs rise, who exactly is the tariff working for? I don't think the July rally in Milford answered that question. I don't think November's election will fully answer it either. But I suspect the autoworkers still clocking in every morning in Michigan, watching their own numbers rather than a campaign speech, already have a clear sense of where they stand.
