There's a particular kind of financial vertigo in signing loan paperwork at eighteen years old for a decision you're told will define the rest of your life — and then spend the next two decades discovering just how literally true that turns out to be. For 43 million Americans, that's not a metaphor. It's a monthly line item, still showing up on their bank statement years, sometimes decades, after they walked across a graduation stage.

Let's start with the scale of it. Total outstanding student loan debt in the United States reached approximately $1.866 trillion as of March 2026, according to Federal Reserve data — making it the second-largest category of consumer debt in the country, trailing only mortgages, and exceeding both auto loans and credit card debt combined. That figure has grown roughly 133 percent since 2010, when it stood at $760 billion, driven by a combination of rising tuition, expanding enrollment, and increasingly expensive graduate school borrowing.

What's particularly striking is how little debt cancellation efforts have managed to bend that overall trajectory. Even after the previous administration canceled more than $170 billion in student loans for roughly 4.8 million borrowers through various forgiveness programs, total outstanding debt still grew by $29 billion in a single year, because new borrowing of approximately $95 billion outpaced both cancellations and regular repayments combined. That dynamic illustrates something important: debt forgiveness, however meaningful for the individuals it helps, cannot by itself solve a structural problem rooted in the underlying cost of college itself.

The average federal student loan borrower now owes somewhere between $39,700 and $40,467, depending on the source, with the figure climbing to roughly $42,000 to $43,500 once private loans are factored in. But averages obscure enormous variation by degree type. While undergraduates make up 83 percent of all borrowers, graduate and professional students hold a disproportionate 43 percent of total outstanding debt — roughly $762 billion. Average debt for a master's degree runs around $71,800, while professional degrees in law, medicine, and dentistry can leave graduates owing $181,200 or more. Medical school graduates specifically owed an average of nearly $280,000 in graduate debt alone as of 2025 — a staggering figure that helps explain why some of the country's most highly trained professionals still describe feeling financially strapped years into their careers.

Part of the reason graduate debt has ballooned so dramatically is structural: unlike undergraduates, graduate students can borrow up to the full cost of attendance through federal Grad PLUS loans with no aggregate borrowing limit — a policy design that, critics argue, creates a perverse incentive for graduate programs to raise tuition, since there's effectively no ceiling on what students can be expected to borrow to attend.

Here's where the picture gets genuinely nuanced, and worth being honest about. Over the past decade, tuition and fees at public four-year and two-year institutions have declined by 7 percent and 10 percent respectively, even as private nonprofit university tuition rose about 2 percent over the same period. That's a meaningfully different story than the "runaway tuition" narrative that often dominates headlines — and it suggests the debt crisis isn't purely a story of colleges endlessly raising sticker prices, but something more layered involving enrollment patterns, declining state funding for public universities, and a growing share of students pursuing more expensive graduate and professional credentials.

Still, even with that nuance, the 2025-2026 in-state tuition and fees at public four-year universities averaged $11,950 according to the College Board — a substantial cost before factoring in housing, food, books, and other expenses that push the real total cost of attendance considerably higher for most students and families.

For borrowers actually in repayment, the monthly burden varies enormously depending on their plan. Federal borrowers on the standard 10-year repayment plan pay an average of $337 a month, though 57 percent of borrowers are now enrolled in income-driven repayment plans that cap payments at 5 to 10 percent of discretionary income — a structure designed to make repayment more manageable, particularly for lower earners.

But that flexibility hasn't eliminated distress for everyone. As of the fourth quarter of 2025, 10 percent of federal student loan dollars were delinquent, and the burden falls hardest on specific groups: borrowers earning under $50,000 fall behind on payments at nearly three times the rate of those earning $100,000 or more, and borrowers with some college but no completed four-year degree — meaning they carry debt without the earnings boost a diploma typically provides — fall behind at nearly four times the rate of those holding graduate degrees. That's arguably the cruelest outcome the current system produces: the people carrying debt without a credential to show for it are also the ones struggling hardest to pay it off.

To offer this issue the balanced treatment it deserves, it's worth acknowledging that Americans remain genuinely split on the right solution. Polling has found majority support for limited loan forgiveness — a 2022 NPR/Ipsos poll found 55 percent of Americans backed canceling up to $10,000 in federal student debt — but that support drops considerably for larger, more sweeping forgiveness proposals, and critics across the political spectrum have raised legitimate concerns about fairness to those who never took out loans, didn't attend college, or already paid off their own debt through years of sacrifice.

So here's what's worth sitting with, regardless of where you land politically: if the total cost of college is rising more slowly than headlines often suggest, but student debt keeps climbing anyway, driven substantially by graduate borrowing with no real ceiling, is the real crisis actually about tuition — or about a financing structure that lets costs expand without meaningful limits at exactly the level, graduate and professional education, where borrowers can least afford to discover the ceiling didn't exist? For the 43 million Americans currently carrying this debt into their thirties, forties, and beyond, that isn't an academic question. It's the difference between a manageable monthly obligation and a financial weight that shapes decisions about homeownership, retirement, and family for decades after the diploma was already earned.
