There's a particular kind of cognitive dissonance built into American college football's opening weekend this year. TCU and North Carolina will kick off the 2026 season not in Fort Worth or Chapel Hill, but at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland, a genuinely remarkable commercial expansion for a sport built, at least in its founding mythology, around unpaid amateur student-athletes representing their universities. The game airs on ESPN at noon Eastern, broadcast internationally, generating revenue across multiple continents before a single snap has been played on American soil.

I want to ask the question I think deserves more scrutiny than another breathless season-opener preview: if college football has become genuinely global enough to justify flying two teams across the Atlantic for a marquee opening weekend fixture, why does the sport's basic economic relationship with the athletes generating that value remain so unresolved?

Let's be honest about the scale of what's actually happening here. College football in 2026 isn't a modest amateur pastime anymore; it's a genuinely massive commercial enterprise, broadcast across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, Fox, CBS, and NBC simultaneously this opening weekend alone, spanning conferences that themselves have been dramatically reshaped by television revenue in recent years. The Mountain West Conference's own realignment this season, losing marquee programs like Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Utah State to the Pac-12, reflects exactly the kind of conference-hopping driven overwhelmingly by media rights money that's transformed the sport's entire competitive landscape over the past several years.

Against that backdrop, a Dublin season opener isn't an outlier. It's the logical continuation of a sport that has systematically pursued every available revenue stream, international broadcast markets included, while the athletes actually playing the games have only recently, and only partially, begun receiving direct financial compensation through Name, Image, and Likeness deals, a system still meaningfully different from the employment status and collective bargaining protections professional athletes take for granted.

I don't think it's accurate to suggest nothing has improved for college athletes; that would ignore real, substantial progress. The NIL era, formalized following a series of legal challenges and NCAA policy shifts, has allowed college football players to earn genuine money from endorsements, sponsorships, and increasingly, direct payments tied to their on-field value, something unthinkable even five years ago. Star quarterbacks and marquee players at programs like USC, Ohio State, and Oregon, all ranked among this year's top recruiting classes, can now earn genuinely substantial income while still competing at the collegiate level, a meaningful departure from the strict amateurism model that defined the sport for generations.

There's also a reasonable argument that the sport's continued commercial expansion, international games, expanded conference footprints, richer broadcast deals, actually benefits athletes indirectly by growing the overall revenue pool from which NIL deals, scholarship enhancements, and athletic department resources ultimately draw. A bigger, more commercially successful sport arguably creates more opportunity for the athletes within it, even if that opportunity remains unevenly distributed.

Still, NIL compensation, however genuine an improvement, isn't the same as employment status, and that distinction carries real consequences college football's marketing tends to obscure. Athletes traveling to Dublin for this weekend's opener don't have the same basic workplace protections, injury compensation guarantees, or collective bargaining representation that professional athletes generating comparable broadcast revenue would expect as a baseline. When a program markets its season opener as a genuinely global made-for-television event, the athletes are functioning, in every practical sense, as professional entertainers generating international broadcast revenue, without the formal employment relationship that status would typically require elsewhere in the entertainment and sports industries.

Ask yourself honestly: if a Fortune 500 company flew its workforce across the Atlantic to generate revenue from an international audience, would we accept "they're technical students, not employees" as a satisfactory explanation for why those workers lack standard labor protections? That's not a rhetorical trick question; it's the genuine legal and ethical tension currently unresolved at the heart of major college football, one that continues generating litigation, congressional hearings, and NCAA policy debates without a fully settled resolution.

This tension around athlete treatment isn't confined to compensation alone. This week's news that a TCU player was reportedly dismissed from the team following an alleged locker room assault, just weeks before the very season opener sending his former teammates to Dublin, highlights another dimension of the same broader accountability question: when college athletic programs operate at genuinely professional commercial scale, broadcasting internationally, generating hundreds of millions in conference revenue, do their internal accountability and oversight structures actually match that scale, or do they still operate with the more informal, university-administered discipline processes designed for a genuinely amateur enterprise that no longer exists in practice?

Separately, CBS NFL analyst Tony Romo's public acknowledgment this week of "full responsibility for his actions" following a July DUI arrest, receiving three additional citations related to the incident, offers its own uncomfortable parallel about accountability standards across football media and player conduct more broadly, a reminder that the sport's institutions, from broadcast partners to athletic departments, continue navigating genuinely inconsistent standards for how conduct issues get handled publicly.

It's tempting to treat all of this as inside-baseball sports business analysis, disconnected from anything touching ordinary fans' daily lives. I don't think that's quite right. College football remains one of America's genuinely most beloved, most widely shared cultural institutions, filling stadiums with tens of thousands of fans, generating enormous local economic activity in college towns across the country, and shaping regional identity in ways few other American cultural products manage. When the sport's own economic structure remains this unsettled, athletes generating international broadcast revenue without full employment protections, the tension eventually affects the product fans are actually watching transfer portal chaos, NIL-driven roster instability, and conference realignment decisions increasingly divorced from geography or tradition, all downstream consequences of a sport still working out who actually benefits from its massive commercial success.

So here's what deserves genuine scrutiny as college football's 2026 season begins with a marquee international fixture: if the sport has grown commercially sophisticated enough to stage season-opening games in Dublin, broadcast globally, generating revenue across multiple continents, shouldn't the athletes generating that value receive a correspondingly modernized relationship with the institutions profiting from their labor, one that moves beyond NIL's partial solution toward genuine employment protections, healthcare guarantees, and structural accountability matching the sport's actual commercial scale? College football fans deserve a sport whose institutional maturity keeps pace with its genuinely global ambitions, not one that exports games across the Atlantic while still debating, more than a decade into this conversation, whether the athletes making those games possible deserve to be treated as more than amateur participants in an enterprise that stopped being amateur years ago.

College Football Is a Global Business Now. The Players Are Still Treated Like Amateurs.
